Independent Living Trusts

Direct payments from social services are payments made to you or the person you're looking after so that you, or they, can buy care services for themselves. Direct payments aim to give more flexibility in how services are provided. By giving the person in need of care money instead of social care services, that person has greater choice and control over his or her life, and is able to make their own decisions about how their care is delivered.

Some people who choose to use direct payments find it difficult to manage their own money, or arrange their own care, without some support. Setting up an Independent Living Trust is a way of enabling someone in this situation to benefit from the choice and control that direct payments bring by having a group of people who are prepared to act on their behalf, who can take on the responsibility of managing the money and organising the care.
