About us

We are a small to medium sized legal practice, based in central Exeter. Established for over 100 years, we have 35 - 40 staff, working in five departments. These include 5 Equity Partners, with 15 Fee Earners in total. We value working to high standards; learning; enjoying our work; trust and respect; our tradition.

Our Family department deals with a range of work including Cohabitation, Separation, Divorce and resolution of the related financial issues; Children Issues (including public law care proceedings) and International Child Abduction. It does so through a team of 8 staff including 2 Partners and 2 Associate Solicitors.

Solicitor – Family Department.

Duration

April 2019 – January 2020

Hours

9 am to 5.15 pm Monday to Friday (1 hour for lunch)

Salary

Competitive salary, details on application.

Holidays

25 days per year plus Bank Holidays.
Additional leave between Christmas and New Year at the discretion of Partners.

Responsible to

Partner - Head of Department.

Job purpose

To represent clients across a range of family based matters, including Divorce and associated financial issues; Separation; Co-habitation and Children issues. To give clear, comprehensive advice, enabling cases to progress to smooth conclusion.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage client cases effectively and expediently.
  • Meet with clients to take initial instructions and to progress cases as required.
  • To respond promptly and accurately to enquiries from clients and others.
  • Preparation and sending of legal documents and correspondence linked to cases.
  • To act for and represent clients in Court.
  • Instruct and work closely with other professionals including Barristers, Mediators and others as required.
  • Liaise with other legal representatives as necessary.
  • Negotiate with other professionals to secure required client outcomes.
  • Work closely with a secretarial member of staff.
  • Work to statutory, regulatory and quality standards.
  • Keep up to speed with developments in Family Law and their application.

Experience and key skills

  • Minimum of 3 years PQE as a Family solicitor.
  • Previous experience in a similar role in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable taking on, running and building a caseload of private and legal aid family files including divorces, ancillary relief and private children matters.
  • Personable and confident/articulate communicator.
  • Technically sound with a practical knowledge of family law.
  • Knowledge of legal aid and experience in using the Legal Aid Agency’s electronic case management system.
  • Self-motivated, self-organised, resilient and be able to work on own initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to make effective decisions, through professional judgement and diligence.
  • Able to analyse and distil large volumes of information linked to cases.
  • Use effective interpersonal skills to work with a range of diverse people, maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Possess effective planning and prioritisation ability to manage a large workload.
  • Structured and systematic in approach to meet deadlines.
  • Able to communicate effectively and sensitively with a diverse range of people – in writing, by telephone and face to face as required.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure, demonstrating dependability and reliability.
  • Confidence in using required ICT packages and systems – including Word, Excel, PDF and web based portals.
